Activesync failure but completely clean installation

As an Action Pack subscriber, I have just upgraded from Office 2010 beta to
the full RTM version.

In doing this, I decided to start afresh with a clean system and have
rebuilt everything from scratch:
Windows 7 Ulitmate 64bit
Office Pro+ (32bit)
FrontPage 2003 (32bit)
Windows Mobile Device Center (64bit).

Phone is a HTC TouchHD running latest Orange ROM.

I'm unable to get it to sync any details - keeps coming up on the desktop
saying
first that Sync Failed and then ActievSync encountered an error on the
desktop (error code listed on phone is the common 0x85010014).

I've deleted and recreated my Outlook profile, wiped and reloaded the phone
so its back at factory defaults and still getting the same error message.

Have done the bit about unchecking the USB-to-PC option with no joy either.

I now have a phone with no contacts or calendar and cannot get them to sync
with my computer.

Tried it with Windows firewall on and off also.

Can anyone urgently shed any light on this?

Forgot to add that I only sync my contacts, calendar and notes between
Outlook and the phone - I don't sync emails or any other files.

Well, I guess the real question (from your "urgently shed light" comment) is
do you want to fix the underlying issue, or just quickly get your data on
the phone and get on with your work?

I'll concentrate on the second option, since I've kicked WMDC to the curb
long ago. My last USB sync was in August 2008.

The only decent alternatives to WMDC are wireless- either cloud based, or
over a network using your PC as a server. I personally use Funambol from
Funambol.com. Sort of a "poor man's Exchange server," based on open source
SyncML, it's relatively stable, and can work either by installing the client
software on your mobile, a "connector" for Outlook, and a very lightweight
server software package on your PC, (or using any variety of free or paid
hosted Funambol servers instead. AOL runs a free one under the name "AOL
Sync," and Funambol itself operates a test server at my.funambol.com new
users can try for 90 days (ostensibly to test out Funambol before devoting
time to setting up their server software on your PC.)

Another alternative, is to use Google Sync- you create a GMail and Google
Calendar account if you don't have one, get your PIM data into Google
(either via import/export, or by syncing Outlook and Google with the Google
Desktop Sync plug-in which syncs GooCal with Outlook Calendar, but you'll
need a third-party app to sync Contacts, like KiGoo, which will cost a few
quid, or the free GO Connector.)

The real advantage of Google Sync is that don't need to add any software to
the device. Google uses EAS (Exchange Activesync) to sync with the device,
so you enter m.google.com and your GMail credentials into Activesync on the
device and you're all set. (Google Sync needs to be "hacked" to connect to
Outlook 2010- they haven't updated it to recognize 2010 as a valid version
of Outlook, although it works fine with it. An error message telling you
it's only compatible with 2K3 and 2K7 will pop up until you follow the
simple instructions here:
<http://blog.sublogic.com/2010/03/08/getting-google-calendar-sync-to-work-with-outlook-2010/>

Bev Howard set up an excellent, informative "how to" page on Google Sync and
Windows Mobile here:
http://bevhoward.com/GoogleSync.htm

At the very least, either suggestion above should get you up and running
until hopefully someone with more knowledge and patience with WMDC than I
can help with the WMDC connection problem.

All I can offer beyond what you've already tried (uncheck advanced
functionality, hard reset) are the usual trobleshooting methods- a detect
and repair of your PST, trying a different USB port, removing the WinMo
device in the PC's Device Manager (select "Show Hidden Devices" to find it)
then reboot and try to reconnect, and uncheck all sync options (Contacts,
Calendar, Media, etc.) in WMDC and attempt to sync "nothing," and then add
the options back in one by one if it connects and syncs.

Good luck!
